UMW Corner March

by Terryann McCoy, secretary

Leota Trimmer and Ruth Beckwith served as hostesses for the March 14th UMW meeting at 3 p.m. in the Sunrise Room. Everyone enjoyed the lovely display of tasty foods they provided. With flexibility, adaptability, and determination we dealt with the absence of electricity due to a downed powerline in front of the church. Our speakers, Rich and Sarah Vogt, never missed a beat, shifting from a photo-based presentation to using their battery-powered laptop and a photobook. Their dedication to the work with Pioneer Bible Translators was obvious. Their love for their adopted home and the people of Tanzania was evident. They shared the challenges with humor that reflected their coping skills and persistence in doing God’s work there: ant armies invading their home; monkeys daily helping themselves to the fresh fruit on their trees; a banana plant finally producing fruit after two and half years only to realize it will only produce once, then must be cut down and a new start planted.

Rich is director of the support branch for the mission. Sarah teaches the children of the missionaries. They shared information about their home, the plants, the animals, the churches they have worshipped with, and other missions they interact and work with, the local foods, and the availability of western foods five hours away. Their favorite celebrations are those centered around the introduction of a new Bible translation in the heart language of the people.

Pray for the Vogts as they return to Tanzania on April 23rd. They expressed how special our prayers and support are for them. On difficult days they are encouraged knowing we back home are holding them in prayer.

During the business meeting, plans were completed for the March Soup & Sandwich lunch and for the Men & Boys’ Banquet. Anita Shawler is our district shepherdess for 2019. April 13th is Annual Day Apart for Capital Area South. Women will gather at Wesley Church of Hope from 8:30 to 2:30. Contact Ann Arebalo by March 27th to make reservations at $12 each.

Join us on April 11th at 3 p.m. at the church for our next meeting. Brenda Hanna will lead.
